DSOfile: The Untold Story – How to access Microsoft Office file properties programmatically via .net

75 Helpful Web Design Resources – Pretty much what it says on the tin. Links for design, typography, stock images and other stuff.

LibraryThing – Kind of like Amazon Books, but with the shopping very understated. Tell it what books you’ve got and it’ll tell you what other books you may like based on tags, scores, and “people who own this also own…”. Sort of like last.fm but for books. There are links through to amazon too.

.htaccess generator – An easy form based wizard for generating an apache .htaccess file.

Moral Decency

Labours latest fundraising event was an auction, one of the items being a signed copy of the Hutton report into David Kelly’s death. I think it represents labours attitude towards the Hutton report and David Kelly; glee and self-satisfaction for their own self interest rather than respect and compassion for Dr Kelly. I can’t understand how a high ranking, presumably intelligent barrister could begin to think that this was a good idea.

Stewart Jackson has tabled an Early Day Motion over it. Over twice as many MPs have this week signed a motion to congratulate Hereford United on promotion rather than this.

That this House notes that senior members of the Labour Party including hon. Members and Government Ministers attended a party fundraising event last week at the Arts Club in Mayfair; further notes that a copy of the official report by Lord Hutton into the death of Government scientist Dr David Kelly, signed by Ms Cherie Booth QC, was auctioned for party funds raising £400; believes this conduct to be in appalling bad taste, arrogant and crassly insensitive in seeking to make money, albeit indirectly, through hawking, as a novelty item, an official Government report into the death of a public servant; regrets the distress caused to the family and friends of the late Dr Kelly.

Stewart Jackson MP

I bet these people sleep like babies too.

About

As the domain name may suggest I am Dean Sas. Not just any Dean Sas but the number one Dean Sas in the world (proof). I’m a twenty-something geek who loves toast, and potatoes, usually not together but often with cheese.

When not at work, studying or socialising, I can be frequently be found on Ubuntu related channels on irc.freenode.net, bug triaging on launchpad, or just spending time with Sara.

Shockingly enough, I also enjoy watching films, reading books and listening to music.

I use open PGP, my key ID is D729F676.

T-Shirts

// May 20th, 2006 // No Comments » // General

I’ve been wanting to buy some new t-shirts for some time, two of the ones I bought pre-holiday were a bit on the large side, which was nice in hot Turkey but I never wear them at home. As I’m back to doing my own washing in a couple of months, I could do with some more clothes. My usual clothing retailers have had nothing that I particularly fancied, but reading Ross Burton’s blog I came across Threadless. I’ve ordered Undercover Pirate and Nothing Rhymes With Orange, though I’m not sure on cherry and fairy rhyming. Only £20 including shipping from the U.S. Type SUPER TEES in the coupon box and enjoy $3 off.

Bleaklow Moor Blog – A blog about the experiences of a peak district ranger, with a fair smattering of photos.

Build Your Own NAS/Subversion/Web/Anything Micro-Server An overview of using a Buffalo Linkstation or Linksys NSLU2 as a linux server. I’m tempted to get one of them to store backups and to share my music over the network via DAAP. And for the geeky fun aspect.

Threadless – Limited edition amateur designed T-shirts. Despite being designed by anyone, some of these t-shirts are really good.

One Week Off

// May 2nd, 2006 // No Comments » // General

I’ve just had a week off of work, and I’ve spent it catching up on fun things…

Reading the books I picked up at the A515 bookshop a couple of months ago:

  • Communism, a Brief History: Sort of interesting, it’s a very quick glance through communism from it’s conception to it’s execution and it’s failings.
  • Robert Heinlein – The Moon is a Harsh Mistress: Maybe the best of his books I’ve read.

I’ve also flicked through David Allens – Getting Things Done again, and I’m now half way through Buddhism – The Path to Enlightenment.

Playing computer games:

I’ve also been playing with Tremulous, a free multiplayer only team based shooter that’s quite innovative and I’ve reinstalled Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory to hopefully play with the Lugradio crowd. I’m not sure which one I’m going to play going forward though.

Watching DVDs:

  • Star Wars: Clone Wars Vol2 – More of the first one, this time portraying the events right up to the beginning of episode 3.
  • 1984: Uhm, not bad, but vastly inferior to the book for reasons I can’t quite nail down.
  • Family Guy Series 4: Like the other three, except the surreal bits are longer.

I’ve also decided to try and organise myself a bit better using Tomboy to make notes and my calendar for time specifc things in a Getting Things Done-esque way.
