SNAP

// April 27th, 2005 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

SNAP or SNail-based data transfer Protocol has been implemented by a team of self described ‘internet addicts’. It’s kind of a variation on the RFC for IP over Avian Transport. They’ve reported speeds roughly 25% greater than typical ADSL speeds. They have more information in a rather humorous writeup.

Activesync

Microsofts worse piece of software foils me again :( . I’ve switched my computer on without noticing the bluetooth dongle wasn’t left in, so I plugged it in after booting up and attempted to sync with my iPaq, only neither device could see each other, although activesync does see the com port and that it’s useable and open, so I restarted my iPaq and still no joy. Now annoyed I removed my bluetooth dongle and tried to sync over USB. That was just as unsuccessful as before…So now it looks like I’ve got to restart my computer just to syncronise with my PDA. Yes, the twentyfirst century is here and I’ve still got to reboot to make Microsoft software do it’s job.

I’m hoping that Microsofts new “it just works” slogan actually means something when it comes to Longhorn.

Incidentally by the way my Sony Ericsson syncronisation software works fine.

I got my first gnome package committed last night. The British translation for f-spot… Not much but it’s a start, i’m looking around for programs to start work on, or some nice easy bug fixes :)

A long path

Product Image: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Wow. This is a Star Wars RPG that like a good book, I couldn’t put down. The game is essentially an adapted set of dungeon and dragons rules set in the Star Wars universe. However all the geeky dungeons and dragons dice roles etc has been hid away….and replaced by geeky Star Wars stuff, which is more appealable.

Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) has a great storyline set 4000 years before the films- it actually feels like it could actually be a Star Wars film, there’s plot twists ahoy and the chance to shape the story and your destiny nearly everytime you speak to someone. The graphics are really nice too, though I couldn’t get the best out of them on my Geforce 4 MX and being Star Wars it has lots of lovely noises with lightsabres crackling and starships blasting.

Beneath all that is the gameplay though, and KOTOR is easy to get to grips with (though the difficulty in some places was very high), involving and most importantly very fun. There’s no shortage of things to do either, as well as the main quest you have a few sub games and a variety of sub quests which tend to fill out your partys characters.. I’ve just completed it in roughly 38 hours and at that I know there’s plenty of subquests that went unfulfilled…

I think anyone could play this game, whether they’re an RPG fan or not (all the
experience points and RPG type stuff can be taken care of automatically if you so desire) but it’ll (obviously) appeal to Star Wars fans the most..

I already have got the sequel to start playing….must try and wait till after exams though!

Tony Blair – It Wasn’t Me

// April 24th, 2005 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

I’ve just found this highly amusing flash video courtsey of Guido. It’s a parody of Shaggys – It Wasn’t Me track from a couple of years ago, taking the chance to lampoon Blair, Bush, Howard and Blunkett.

It’s altogether quite genius.

Stanley Johnson

Boris Johnson has just wrote an article about his father Stanley Johnson running at the election (as the conservative party candidate of Teignbridge). He’s also blogging as well.

You can tell they’re father and son, look at their photos:

Now I’ve got two Johnsons to read…

Trippy Trademarks

jamesh has just wrote about Cadburys trademarking a colour in Australia. They have a trademark pending with the Australian patent office (number 902086). It’s totally absurd that someone can trademark the use of the colour purple in regard to all the things that they have – it wouldn’t be so bad if it was just related to confectionary I guess.. I checked the UK tradmark index and couldn’t find a relevant UK application. There’s no mention of the trademark on cadburys uk site.

Nothing like a good abuse of the patent system.
